Start a Party Giveaway

Drink cool be cool!

On the 16th of September J&B will be hosting the first ever Start A Party Awards in Jo’burg as the finale to a series of online challenges set by the brand. Promising to be everything a normal awards night is not (they’re usually pretty dull), J&B will be presenting its own take on what an awards show should be. DJs Culoe De Song and Kenzhero will be ripping it up on the night alongside some mystery guests in a transformed Turbine Hall.

To get your hands on tickets to the J&B Awards, register on www.jbawards.co.za, click the RSVP button and if you’re one of the lucky few, you’ll crack the nod to this exclusive event.

Alternatively, if you’d like to go, simply go to our Facebook page, write “Start a party” on our wall and we could be sending you double tickets to this event. As easy as that (if you do it before Sunday the 12th, that is)!

The (not so) Short Straw

Local is / is not lekker

I know this beautiful girl whose brother plays in a band called ShortStraw. They’ve just released their first music video and while I’d say that for a first video it’s really good, that wouldn’t be entirely accurate:- for any video it’s damn good! Well done guys…

Here are some of their upcoming gigs:

9 September at The Woods with Columbus
11 September at Hotbox Studios in Pretoria
17 September at The Bohemian
23 September at Wolves for another acoustic show (Wolves on a Thursday night for an unplugged set is epic)

The Wilderness Downtown

Technology is fun!

This is one of the coolest things I’ve seen online in a long time. And yes, Google played their part. You basically create a music video for the Arcade Fire’s track We used to wait by entering the address of the home you grew up in. Google street view does the rest.

If you’re not using Chrome as your browser you’ll need to load it up. After that, it’s as simple as going to The Wilderness Downtown to try it out.

Thanks Tommy

The kid is sharp!

Uncategorized

Having just been looking at well designed schools we came across quite a clever young dude. “How clever?” you may ask. Almost as smart as me before I came across the permanent mind numbing effect associated with binge drinking.

Not quite, but anyway…

Arran Fenandez is going to Cambridge University. Quite a lot of people do that, but not at 15 and a quarter years old.

Fernandez, a math prodigy, will study the subject at Fitzwilliam College, the youngest person to be accepted into the notoriously difficult course since 1773, when William Pitt the Younger got the fat envelope. Pitt went on to become the British Prime Minister at the age of 24. Isaac Newton and Stephen Hawking are also alums. So, you know, no pressure.

Fernandez, who says he wants to study more English literature and go bird-watching while at university, is not breaking any molds as far as brainiacs are concerned. He’s been tutored by his father and his main ambition is solving the Riemann hypothesis. He wears T-shirts with Shakespeare on them. He speaks three languages including Latin. He plays the violin and the clarinet. He has memorized and can recite 2,000 digits of pi.

From here.

Killer jersey little clever man.

Thanks Suzie

I wish school had looked like this…

Design delight!

If only more schools would realise that a pleasant work environment leads to better outputs. You could argue that it’s a factor of money, but there are many schools that probably have bottom lines that would put quite a few businesses to shame.

Enter La Marais Du Billet School. No surprises that it’s Swiss.

Beautiful!

(Almost) Legends

Local is / is not lekker

This is what you get when you take a bunch of dudes with an idea for some comedy, a local production company and a soundtrack by aKING.

“(Almost) Legends” tells the story of seven different South Africans and how they hope that the 2010 Soccer World Cup (and beyond) will change their lives forever. As they are followed around by a camera crew we are exposed to their interesting and strange ideas and, ultimately, their failures and character flaws. We get a comical & tongue-in-cheek glimpse into the lives of very “normal” South Africans.

Good work Firestorm

Twangoo comes to Joburg!

Ingenius business

Twangoo, South Africa’s premier group buying club, uses the power of collective purchasing to access exclusive deals on exciting things to do in your city. The Twangoo team has been approaching the aspirational brands across each city and asking them to offer Twangoo members an exclusive deal of such incredible value that they would be silly to turn it down. However there is a kicker to all this: The deal only happens if a predetermined number of people sign up
for it. Members are told via email, Facebook, Four Square or Twitter of any new deal. If they see something they like, they reserve it and when enough people have signed up ‘the deal is on!’ A voucher is emailed and then redeemed at the participating business.

It was unfortunately only available to the lucky guys down in Cape Town, but this is changing. Just today they launched in Joburg with a deal at the Butcher Block in Rosebank. If you’re interested go to their site for more.

Great idea dudes – we wish all the best in your venture.

A bizarre moment in horse racing (which is a rather bizarre thing in itself). Watch the last 30 seconds.

It screeches…

Perfect products

I received a notification to collect a parcel from our very slow friends at the post office so went over thinking it was most likely a speeding fine. I entered the dimly lit, muggy room with that special kind of excitement that comes in the form of registered mail and rushed back to the car to open the compact parcel. Inside I found one of these…

It’s called the Dusk and is made by a company called Ila Security.

They tell us:

Our mission is to empower women through a stylish range of security products. We have come up with the genius idea of combining simple yet effective safety devices with fashion in order to make women want to carry them around with them, therefore increasing their safety when they’re out and about. So often women put themselves in unnecessary amounts of danger without realising it. With our fashionable ranges of devices, women will carry our products, not only in order to help increase their security but because the products look good and thanks to our fantastic team of designers, they also double up and have extra features such as working as a bag charm, or a compact mirror.

I tried it out and I’m sure the neighbours (perhaps the whole suburb actually) think something dodgy is going down at my place. 130dB of screeching woman can do that.

If you’re a little nervous and want another voice louder than your own, the good news is that they’re available, or soon to be, at Busby House, Foschini and Woolworths.

And Bob’s your Uncle!

Drink cool be cool!

As I’m sure you’re well aware we’re big fans of wine and beer at STM. In fact anything that has alcohol in it, short of methylated spirits (partly because having to fill in the meths register at Pick ‘n Pay brings on a certain type of guilt). It was therefore with great excitement that we saw you can now get wine in a 550ml beer bottle, which is great for when you feel like smashing two thirds of a bottle of wine in your face.

Seriously though, I think it’s more for the likes of picnics or other places where you typically want some wine without the mission of a cork. The idea comes from the guys at Boer & Brit, is called Bob’s Your Uncle and sells for 20 ZAR a bottle.

While I think it looks like a really cool product I can’t help but think it would’ve been better named, Jou ma se…

While I was on their site I came across this very cool looking bottle of Cap Classique Brut.

Ek wil jou he!

Godzilla gets a facelift

Motoring madness

And by Godzilla I’m talking about the motoring beast that is the Nissan GT-R. The sleaker new look makes it even prettier (although I think pretty is probably the wrong word) while improving its aerodynamics. Rumours are that the facelift will come with a power increase too. I want one…

Check out the details and a couple more pics here.

Thanks Wag
